Over the last few days we have been performing a few maintenance tasks. The most notable is the installation of SuPHP.
All of our servers now have SuPHP active on them. This in basic terms runs PHP scripts as your own username rather than nobody. There are many advantages to this including the security of PHP scripts on shared servers. File permissions now less critical for running most PHP scripts.
However all files and folders much have CHMOD permissions of less than 755. We recommend 644 for all files and 755 for all directories within the public_html folder. Should you change the permissions to a value higher than 755 you may be faced with an error such as “500 Internal Server Error”. All you have to do to fix this is change the permissions back down to below 755.
With this, it also means you will no longer have to change the permissions of certain files/directories during installation of scripts. If a any documentation asks you to do so you can ignore this step.
SuPHP increases the stability of scripts such as WordPress and allows for seamless automatic updates and plugin installation.

Software updates were successful. We managed to do these vital upgrades with only a few seconds of downtime (reboot).
However, our website was down for a little longer as we encountered a few problems, these problems were promptly fixed and did not effect our clients.
The software versions are now: PHP 5.2.12 and MySQL 5.0.89 on all of our client servers.
There may be a few moments of downtime today. We are about to update PHP and MySQL to a more current version. More news on this to follow.
